What is a solitaire ring?

The solitaire is one of the most iconic jewels in the world of jewelry and undoubtedly the most traditional form of engagement ring.

It is a ring adorned with a center stone. On a solitaire ring, the setting disappears in front of the stone and magnifies it, especially when it's a diamond. The center stone is firmly held in place by four or six claws, giving the jewel an elegant, pure line.

The solitaire can be designed in many different ways: the center stone can be surrounded or shouldered, the ring can be paved with diamonds or not... The possibilities are endless.

How to choose a solitaire ring for women?

It's not always easy to know which type of solitaire is right for you. To help you get your bearings, discover the different styles of solitaires below.

The simple solitaire

The simple solitaire is adorned with a single gemstone set in the center of the setting.

The round brilliant cut is often preferred to guarantee incomparable brilliance to the jewel. This is the case with the Lady models in Gemmyo's solitaire collection.

If you're looking for a simple solitaire with a touch of originality, you can also opt for the Lady Ovale model, which features an oval center stone.

The pavé solitaire

Close to the simple solitaire, the pavé solitaire features a band set with diamonds. The Gemmyo pavé solitaire will appeal to those who like to combine the purity of the solitaire with a touch of sophistication.

Within the Gemmyo collections, the Lady Pavé model is the pavé version of the iconic Lady.

The encircled solitaire

The encircled solitaire is a solitaire whose center stone is encircled by a diamond pavement. This creates a luminous halo around the center stone, making it appear larger and increasing its brilliance tenfold. The effect is visually striking, even more so if the ring is paved!

The shouldered solitaire

As the name suggests, this type of solitaire is "shouldered" by stones (usually smaller) arranged on either side of the center stone. It's particularly appealing to women looking for an elegant, slightly vintage look.

Which stone for your solitaire ring?

The choice of stone depends mostly on the tastes of the person to whom the solitaire is destined and the occasion it celebrates.

If it's an engagement ring, diamonds are a safe bet. Statistically, diamond solitaires account for the vast majority of engagement rings. This is due to the diamond's strong symbolism, but also to its exceptional properties (hardness and refractive power).

Engagement ring or not, the most important thing is to select a piece of jewelry that matches the style and desires of the person for whom it's intended. For example, sapphire and aquamarine are often chosen to set an engagement ring.

How to care for and clean a solitaire ring

Gemmyo solitaire rings are designed to accompany you every day and stand the test of time with you.

Like any precious piece of jewelry, however, they require regular care and a few precautions to last over time.

Here are our tips for caring for and cleaning your solitaire ring:

Protect your jewelry from water

Regular or prolonged exposure to humidity could alter the beauty of your ring. So it's best to remove it before washing your hands or showering. This will also avoid soap deposits under the stone(s).

Store your jewelry in a jewellery box

We recommend placing your ring in a jewelry box when you're not wearing them to protect it from moisture or dust.

Avoid carrying heavy loads

We advise you to remove your rings when carrying heavy loads such as suitcases or shopping bags. Under pressure, they could deform slightly and, in the case of a ring set like the solitaire, let a stone escape.

Clean your jewelry regularly

The solitaire is a set ring, which in fact requires special care because impurities can over time slip under the stone. To dislodge them or prevent them from appearing, it's best to clean your ring regularly with soapy water and a soft-bristled brush. Once or twice a year, it's a good idea to have your ring professionally cleaned, using ultrasound to remove all residues. This is a service we offer in all our boutiques, free of charge and for life.
