The basics

Before we get into the major characteristics of rose gold, let's review some of the essentials about gold.

The main characteristics of rose gold

Rose gold is the closest metal to its cousin yellow gold... More modern and discreet than the latter, it has become one of the most used metals in jewelry for several reasons:

——    1. 18K rose gold, a new and upcoming metal of reference

Rose gold is a metal that is perfectly suited for jewelry worn on a daily basis.

  • First of all, as we have seen in the basic notions, 18K gold is a solid metal, very hard and therefore the most able to withstand the shocks of everyday life, especially for a ring.

  • Gold is a metal that is extremely resistant to corrosion. It will therefore be very durable over time. This is why it has been used since time immemorial for precious objects that must last for centuries.

For all these reasons, we particularly recommend 18K rose gold for a piece of jewelry that will be worn on a daily basis such as a wedding band or an engagement ring.

Beyond its resistance and hardness, rose gold is a reference metal because of its colour!

——    2. Rose gold is nothing more than yellow gold with a slight copper tint

As a reminder, the composition of yellow gold is pure gold, in greater or lesser quantities depending on the titration, the rest being silver and copper.

At Gemmyo, as in most of the major jewelry houses, we only use 18K gold, i.e. 75% pure gold, 12.5% silver and 12.5% copper.

To obtain rose gold, we slightly increase the percentage of copper in a yellow gold base to about 20%.

To put it simply: rose gold is therefore yellow gold with a higher copper content.

The fact that it is simply a dosage of copper in the alloy is a real advantage. Like yellow gold, rose gold will never lose its colour over time.

This is important because this is not the case for all precious metals, even for its closest cousins such as white gold or black gold for example.

To note

You may come across jewelry Maisons that offer a very pronounced rose gold: this is not the choice we have made, the rose gold at Gemmyo is very light and therefore very soft !

Rose gold is very popular with women and increasingly with men for its more modern look. It is even becoming one of the metals that our male clientele is most attracted to!

For example, rose gold represents 18% of our sales of men's wedding bands.

If you want to know more about our wedding bands, find our guide here.

——    3. Rose gold, the metal of the moment

At Gemmyo, it is possible to create the jewel of your choice thanks to our palette of 15 gemstones and 6 different metals.

Which gemstone-metal combinations should I choose? Are there any mistakes to avoid? How does one avoid a mistake? Don't worry, we will guide you here on the most beautiful combinations of metals and stones. We would like to accompany you and give you some advice to help you make the best choice without limiting you to the possibilities of association!

Appreciated for its slightly coppery and modern tone, rose gold particularly enhances stones such as tanzanite, tourmaline, aquamarine or diamond.

Although softness is very much in fashion today, it is more delicate to associate this precious metal with dark blue colours such as sapphire or topaz. Perfect for dark or tanned skin tones, this metal is also very popular with light skin tones.

As you can see, it's hard not to fall for the charm of rose gold

What should we remember about rose gold?

——    Its advantages:

  • 18K rose gold is the most resistant metal used in jewelry.

  • It appeals to both women and men.

  • Its resistance over time makes it an almost unalterable metal.

  • Its colour is more modern than the more traditional yellow gold.

  • It will keep its colour without ever developing a patina.

——    Its disadvantage:

To conclude

18K rose gold is the best quality of gold, and rose gold, you will find in jewelry.

Resolutely trendy, rose gold is a metal that is much appreciated for its softer colour than the more traditional yellow gold.

Like other golds, rose gold is an extremely hard metal, more so than silver or platinum, two more malleable precious metals that will be slightly more prone to scratching.

This hardness and the fact that it will never lose its colour means that we recommend rose gold for all types of jewelry and especially for jewelry worn on a daily basis such as a wedding band or an engagement ring!
